Environment

Environmental definiton – Fossil based plastic2022-10-27T08:07:40+00:00

Fossil-based plastics (commonly thought of as traditional plastics) are polymers made from petrochemicals.

Environmental definiton – Biobased plastic2022-10-27T08:06:38+00:00

Biobased refers to where the material comes from, it can be partially or fully biobased. Biobased plastics come from renewable biomass, meaning plants. Some common plants that are used to make bioplastics are sugarcane, cassava and corn.

Environmental definiton – Compostable plastic2022-10-27T08:05:55+00:00

Compostable plastic will biodegrade in a compost site. Microorganisms break it down into carbon dioxide, water, inorganic compounds and biomass at the same rate as other organic materials in the compost pile, leaving no toxic residue. Compostable sometimes/often refers to industrial composting, which is a laboratory controlled / optimal environment (in terms of humidity, carbon-nitrogen ratio and temperature to mention a few variables)

Environmental definiton – Biodegradable plastic2022-10-27T08:05:07+00:00

Biodegradable plastic can be broken down completely into water, carbon dioxide and compost by microorganisms under the right conditions. “Biodegradable” implies that the decomposition happens in weeks to months. Bioplastics that don’t biodegrade that quickly are called “durable,” and some bioplastics made from biomass that cannot easily be broken down by microorganisms are considered non-biodegradable.

Environmental definiton – Degradable plastic2022-10-27T08:04:20+00:00

All plastic is degradable, even traditional plastic, but just because it can be broken down into tiny fragments or powder does not mean the materials will ever return to nature. Some additives to traditional plastics make them degrade more quickly. Photodegradable plastic breaks down more readily in sunlight; oxo-degradable plastic disintegrates more quickly when exposed to heat and light.

What is the difference between home and industrial composting?2022-10-27T08:02:44+00:00

The main difference between home and industrial composting is the rate of biodegradation. European bioplastics defines the difference between home and industrial composting as follows: “The main difference between industrial and home/garden composting is that temperatures in industrial composting facilities are much higher and kept stable, whereas the temperature of a home compost are usually lower and less constant as well as being influenced by multiple other factors such as weather conditions. Home composting is a much slower process than industrial composting involving a comparatively smaller volume of waste.”
